‘PRACTICE DEVELOPMENT’

Saturday 23rd DECEMBER 2006 - Friday 5th JANUARY 2007

only for those who have previously worked with Guruji or Sharath - a rare opportunity to work closely with Sharath
(students can attend for the first week only if they wish, however two weeks is recommended)
Only residential places are now available on this workshop.

Sharath Rangaswamy is the grandson of Sri.K. Pattabhi Jois. Like his grandfather, Sharath had an early beginning practising Ashtanga Yoga: he started at the age of 12 and continued to practice until he was 17. He then took two years study leave and gained a diploma in electronics. However Sharath missed his practice and the contact with his grandfather, and so when he was asked to return and assist in the teaching at the busy shala in Mysore, he jumped at the opportunity without hesitation. After five years of teaching, Sri.K.Pattabhi Jois promoted Sharath to Assistant Director of the Ashtanga Yoga Research Institute, and Guruji is now training and preparing Sharath to eventually take full Directorship.

This workshop requires familiarity with the entire Primary Series. Sharath has also requested that participants have worked with him or his grandfather at some time in the past – this can be at one of the workshops on their World Tours, or in Mysore.

The course schedule will be for a practice every morning from Sunday to Friday. Some of these will be Led Primary and some will be Mysore style where students can work on their own practice under Sharath’s guidance. (Last season the classes were split 50% led and Mysore style.) Please note that there will be no morning practice on Moon Days.
There will also be three afternoon ‘Conference’ sessions each week on Sundays, Tuesdays and Thursdays, where students will be free to ask Sharath questions about his teaching, the Ashtanga practice and its evolution, and any other matters.

Please note that at this time of year it is COLD in the mornings in Goa. It quickly warms up when the sun comes out, but at 6am or 7am when the classes start, the shala is COLD. So please come prepared. That means track suits / fleece tops / leggings etc. Be prepared to start your practice in layers of clothing and then shed them as you warm up.

Students can arrive at The Purple Valley Retreat Centre after 2pm on Saturday 23rd December 2006, and are requested to be there before 6pm in time for a Greeting, Introduction followed by Dinner at 6.30pm.
Rooms can be vacated after breakfast on Friday 5th January 2007, and students are requested to have vacated by mid-day on Saturday 6th January.
Students taking the first week only should depart before noon on Saturday 30th December 2006, and students arriving for the second week only should not arrive until after 2pm on Saturday 30th December.

Purple Valley Yoga Retreat is located in a semi-rural part of North Goa, about 3kms from the sea. The location is safe. The Retreat is purpose built and most students live on site, although there are some non-residential places available on most workshops.
The breakfasts and dinner meals are sattvic and vegetarian, and are prepared fresh daily from organic ingredients whenever possible. They are served buffet-style.
The shala is separate from the living accommodation and provides space for 44 mats. Purple Valley is situated among teak, frangipani and palm trees, and the only noises are birds, monkeys and butterflies, and the sob of a distant Enfield.

What people said about this workshop last year:

‘It was so great to be able to spend such a concentrated time with Sharath.’
-- Susan, from London.

‘Purple Valley is such a lovely place. It is friendly and welcoming – I felt like I was in a large family.’
-- Paul, from New York.

‘It was great to be around Sharath in such relaxed circumstances. Of course he wants to get away after class to spend time with his family, and enjoy the markets and beaches of Goa, but during the classes and for a short time afterwards he really gives everything to his students, and he is a great teacher.’
-- Sophia, from Rome
